Jeff the Artist!

About a week ago Jeff and I were out looking for paintings to go in our kitchen and all of them were really expensive, so he said "Why don't I just paint something?" He has always loved art and painted a lot in high school and hasn't had a lot of time since then to paint. However, the hurricane came along and Jeff's school was canceled for a week so he had ample time to take on a project. He painted these in only two days and I love them! They look great in our kitchen and add a lot of much-needed color to the eating area. He is so talented and I am glad he got the opportunity to do something he loves.

In the process

Of course he had to do scenes of his beloved France (plus our kitchen is French decor)

Volunteering for Hurricane Victims

We were able to help out last week with the Hurricane Ike relief efforts. We went to an assisted living center to deliver boxes of food and water to people living there that didn't have power or running water. The building was 10 stories tall and the elevators didn't work so many people were stuck in their apartments. We had such an awesome time meeting and helping people. They were so grateful and we had the best feeling afterwards!

If you want to hear a funny story ask Jeff one day about his experience carrying a man in a wheelchair up 8 flights of stairs (6 of which were done barefoot on a really nasty ground!)

We got some pretty cool T-shirts for volunteering

Hurricane Ike

Well we feel like we had been officially welcomed here to Houston as we have survived our first hurricane. School was cancelled last Thursday as Hurricane Ike's path switched to Houston. I left school that afternoon and I grabbed a few things out of our apartment in downtown Houston and headed up to meet Ashley at my sister JoLynne's house in the suburbs of Houston. The traffic was pretty bad already with everyone trying to get away from the coast. We hunkered down with JoLynne's family and rode out the storm. It was amazing to hear and see what a hurricane is capable of doing. We lost power in the middle of the night and the storm finally started to die down at about the middle of the afternoon the next day. The streets were flooded so we couldn't go down to check our apartment until Monday. We were worried because there is a big palm tree next to our window, but luckily the window didn't break. Our neighborhood looked like a war zone as debris was everywhere. We finally got power back to our apartment last night (Tuesday night) and are starting to see things return back to normal. It has been an exciting week though, and we are glad we survived it.

Flooding in downtown Houston not too far from our apartment

This is a picture of the sky about an hour before the hurricane hit. The sky was eerily beautiful. "The calm before the storm" I guess.
The winds are starting to pick up....(yeah I know I look like a fairy...I don't know what I was doing)
My neice Courtney and I had to experience first hand what a hurricane felt like so we went outside. We were drenched in about 2 seconds...and yes, even in a hurricane Courtney is still fashion conscious

This is what the outside of our apartment complex looked like when we got back to check on our apartment. Sometimes I like to park my car under that tree. I am glad I moved it.
What's left of a McDonald's sign.

This is the gas station next to our apartment. I think that might be some of the missing McDonald's sign in the debris.

Birthday Weekend

I had a very fun Birthday. On Saturday we went to the beach near Galveston. The water was so warm and we had fun building a sand castle. On Monday we had a BBQ and Jeff made a very cool cake in the shape of Texas.

First Day of School

Jeff's first day of Law School - looking the part of a Lawyer

Watch out Ya'll . . . we're in Texas

Jeff did a great job of driving our 17 foot truck with a car towing behind it. It took us 3 days of straight driving to get to Texas. Needless to say, we were extremely relieved to finally make it to Texas.

Jeff is officially a pro at driving a moving truck

We made it! The newest Texans
