Ahoy Matey! Happy 3rd Birthday to our Pirate Jamisen!

Jamisen turned 3 on October 16! It's hard to believe our little guy is getting so grown up.  Ever since we went to Disneyland in the spring Jamisen has been obsessed with Pirates.  We took him on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride not knowing that is was probably a little too scary for his age.  He was terrified of the whole ride and hid on my shoulder but then somehow ever since he can't stop talking about it.  He will take blank pieces of paper and pretend they are maps for his "treasure hunts" and at night he likes us to make up pirate bedtime stories.  So it only seemed fitting that we would celebrate with a pirate party!

I got a little carried away with the theme and had fun coming up with a spread of pirate food.
We had pirate sails (pizza), catch of the day (goldfish crackers), pirate booty popcorn, pirate jewels (grapes), cannon balls (olives), ships and dip, polly's crackers, sea water (bottled water) and pirate's brew (homemade root beer).

I learned an important lesson about  throwing a birthday party for 3 year olds....you don't need centerpieces! These seriously lasted on the tables for the first 10 seconds of the party and then the kids were running around with them and burying their treasure chests around the yard!
When the kids arrived at the party they got to dress up like a pirate.  Jeff did face painting and then they could put on eye patches, pirate hats and handkerchiefs.

Jeff did not disappoint with this year's cake! He made such a fun treasure chest full of edible jewels.  Can you tell Jamisen is one happy boy ready to dive in?

Jeff's 30th Birthday Weekend Celebration

Jeff turned the big 3-0 at the beginning of October and he said he wanted to go to the Bay area to celebrate.  I of course had no objections! Last year we bought season passes to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom and we needed to get some use out of them before they expired so we decided to go there on Saturday. We met up with my cousin and his family that live in the area and had a fun day going on the rides and seeing some shows.  On Sunday we drove up to see Napa Valley. It was an absolutely perfect day - blue skies, white billowy clouds and high 70's.  Later in the evening we drove back to San Francisco and walked around Sausalito. On Monday we crossed over the Golden Gate bridge and spent the day in San Francisco.  By Monday night Jeff thought our trip was over and he was not looking forward to ending the festivities.  Luckily, I had made arrangements without him knowing to have Tuesday (his actual birthday) off of work and for us to drive to Monterey to celebrate his birthday with his family.  He was surprised and so excited when I told him the fun wasn't going to end just yet! :) So Monday night we drove to Monterey and then spent Tuesday riding bikes around Pebble Beach, eating fish and chips, going to the Farmer's Market and having dinner, cake and ice cream with his family.  Jeff commented on how "poetic" it was that he was back in Monterey, where he was born, 30 years later.  I had not made this connection....but I'm going to claim it and say that was my plan all along! ;)

Jamisen was excited he got to feed the elephant a cookie and pet him.

I love this picture Jeff caught of Jamisen playing in the bushes
We ate lunch at an awesome burger joint called Gott's Roadside.  We saw a long line and figured it must be good - it did not disappoint!
 27 weeks pregnant

We stopped in Sonoma at "Traintown" and got to ride on a mini train along 4 miles of track over bridges and through tunnels.
We made a stop along the ride at a miniature town and got to explore the buildings and feed the animals at the petting zoo

 Sausalito

We discovered a cool lighthouse right outside of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Jeff's mom watched Jamisen for us so we could ride bikes around 17 Mile Drive in Pebble Beach and then get some fish and chips at cannery row afterwards.  We lucked out on the weather and it was a gorgeous day for a bike ride
Jamisen with his cousins Noah and Tennyson at the Farmer's Market
I just had to post this one because it makes me laugh.  Noah and Tennyson are so good to Jamisen and completely dote on him and he absolutely adores them.  I think he feels pretty cool hanging with the "big kids"
Jeff's mom went all out to make one of Jeff's favorite dinners-chicken pillows.
She also made this fabulous cake.  This is in honor of our orange kayak that Jeff  has enjoyed taking out this summer.
30 candles! Yikes! ;)

End of August/September Happenings

After we got back from our trip Jamisen started going to preschool 2 days a week.  This is a picture of him on his first day of school. He loves his monkey backpack and I could not get him to wear it on his back, so this is the best I got! He and I both love preschool days.  I look forward to going grocery shopping alone or running errands (which go about 100 times faster when you aren't loading a child in and out of their seat and telling them not to touch things in the store every 5 seconds!) and he loves seeing friends, learning about new subjects each week and his teacher! He has a great teacher and always tells me that she is so nice to him.

The zoo opened a new sea lion exhibit at the end of August so we went to check it out.  I was really impressed.  There are 3 different viewing areas so you can see all aspects of the sea lions. This is our favorite part seeing them swim underwater.

In September I turned 27....yikes! It's weird to think I am approaching the end of my 20's. To celebrate I told Jeff all I wanted to do was have a day of eating delicious food.  I'm already a foodie when I'm not pregnant, so when you add pregnancy to the mix, I get a little obsessed! To start off we went to a favorite breakfast spot where they serve HUGE pancakes. Every time I tell myself to only order one but then somehow it never seems like enough so I order two and then we get it and I think, "why didn't I just get one?!" I think one pancake would feed the 3 of us! After breakfast Jeff watched Jamisen for me while I went maternity shopping with my mom. I got a cute dress for church and some jeans that I have worn every day since! I had great plans for what I wanted to eat for lunch but the huge pancakes sort of messed it up and I was too full so I had to skip lunch.  Later that night we went out to dinner at an Asian restaurant called Dai Bai Dang that has great food.  It was a wonderful birthday!

The next night we got together for a family dinner so Jeff made me a birthday cake to celebrate.  He made a huge cupcake in honor of my love of cupcakes!

My parents have a tradition of taking each couple out to dinner for their birthday.  I look forward to this because it's nice to spend time with them and it's the one time a year I get Teppanyaki!  After dinner we got ice cream sundaes at Marble Slab creamery, I was stuffed!

One Saturday in September there was a random airplane show going on near our house so Lynnsey and I decided to take the boys since both of them love airplanes.  They had so much fun seeing all of the different planes and watching them take off and land.  I love this picture of them holding hands...they are best buds!

Jamisen had a fun field trip to the fire station.  He loves fire trucks and for about a week leading up to his field trip he watched "Handy Manny the Firefighter" about a hundred times so I was soooo excited for him to finally visit the station, tour the truck and meet the firefighters.  He enjoyed the tour of the station but when it came time for the kids to get in the truck and explore, he completely freaked out! I was shocked and couldn't believe it.  I barely got him to sit on the back of the truck (below) before he decided he didn't want to go anywhere near it.  He kept telling me the ladder was going to fall and that the horn was going to be too loud.  I don't know how he got this in his head but there was no convincing him otherwise.  A lot of the moms told me their kids were scared of it last year and now that they are 4 they were really into it, so hopefully next year will be a better experience!

Jamisen also had a field trip to the pizza parlor.  He had fun getting a tour of the kitchen and making his own personal pizza and then eating it after it cooked. This is him and his friend Nate as they add toppings to their pizzas. After they made pizzas they sang some fun songs for the parents and one of them is called "I am a pizza" It's a funny song with hand motions and Jamisen loves it so we have been singing it quite a bit!  It's also horribly catchy so I end up having it stuck in my head all day!
One Sunday night Jeff told Jamisen they were going to build a fort to have a family movie night.  Jamisen was sooo excited! They got every blanket in the house and built the contraption pictured below.  We had fun laying on cushions under the fort, eating popcorn and watching Lion King.

We have been wanting to go camping for the last 2 summers but never could work out a weekend that worked for our friends.  I was bummed that we weren't going to have a chance to go this summer since it was already mid-September and cold weather was around the corner.  Last minute our weekend freed up so we decided to seize our opportunity and just do a quick camping trip.  It was super low key and my kind of camping! We drove about 45 minutes up to the mountains, set up our tent, took the kayak out on the lake for a little bit, then grabbed dinner in town at our favorite pizza place, went back to camp to make s'mores, and then off to bed.  The next morning we packed up and headed to my parents cabin since they were staying there with friends and ate breakfast, showered and got ready for church! It was a great little trip and Jamisen had so much fun. He told us his favorite part was lighting marshmallows on fire and watching them turn into fire balls until they were a ball of charcoal.  He is all boy! My favorite was eating the best s'mores I've ever had. We got the super large "campfire marshmallows" and they did not disappoint.  Jeff roasted them to perfection and they were sooo delicious!

At the end of September Jeff, our friends Garrett and Tashina and Lynnsey ran in the Color Me Rad 5K race at Woodward Park.  As they ran through the park they were "color bombed" with packets of colored corn starch that dyed their clothes.  By the end of the race they were running in a thick cloud of colored dust and were drenched.  As if they didn't have enough color, Jeff got a blue packet and dumped it on Lynnsey when she wasn't looking.  She looked like a blue Smurf! I'm glad it was her and not me! ;)
